Although anyone can sit for an examination without completing the prescribed training courses*, the chart below shows the courses that contain the knowledge tested for each certification. The exact knowledge requirements for each certification were established by IIEI with recommendations from the the IIEI Certification Advisory Board’s Standards Committee. The knowledge course requirements shown in the chart below are taught by IIEI approved training providers worldwide, including colleges, universities and training organizations.

IIEI courses are not required for an individual to sit for a certification exam. However, in order to increase an individual’s chances of successfully completing the exam, they are highly recommended as they are the best means of mastering the stated learning objectives and major topics recommended by the IIEI Certification Advisory Board (CAB).
The CAB has made the following recommendations for students who would like to take a certification exam without participating in the requisite coursework:
An individual may petition the certification department for a waiver for any and/or all courses in order to sit for an exam based upon work and life experience. Students should forward their resume and a letter detailing how their work experience meets the learning objectives for each course required for the certification exam in question. Petitions should be submitted at least 60 days before the desired test date. The certification department will evaluate your experience, knowledge and skills to give an indicator as to whether we believe they have a reasonable expectation of passing the exam. Most waiver determinations are made within 30 days. Waivers are granted at the discretion of the certification department and all decisions are final.
Students who choose to sit for the exam without completing the requisite coursework or without the award of waivers are welcome to sit for the exam. However, unlike those who have completed the courses or who have received waivers, if they do not pass any portion of the exam, they cannot retake the exam without completing all of the suggested coursework.
